You are wanting the best for your family and home, and you are trying to detox the environment that they spend most of the time in but not sure where to start! I get it! It can be overwhelming and confusing when you are just getting into the space of toxin free living, natural living, and or holistic living.
I like things easy, quick and simple. My life is busy and I don’t have time to waste on nonsense. Converting your home is a process and one that is not going to happen over night. Think of the years of habits you have learned.
It was a long process for us, a year actually, and we’re still not perfect, but we’ve been learning along the way!
For us, making this change needed to be simple. Being a special needs mom, adding more stress of complexity to my life was not welcomed. There is a lot of information out there, and it’s hard to know what you can trust and what you can’t. I remember quite often feeling like we just couldn’t win. Something either didn’t work, or it was so expensive that it was not even an option. Once you know how many dangerous chemicals are lurking, you can’t un-know it and your press forward.

Wow, right?? I know but hear me out!!!
Did you know that less than 300 chemicals have been tested to be safe for humans?
It’s true thanks to a Toxic Substance Control Act. This act was passed by Congress in 1976 and grandfathered in over 60,000 chemicals being sold in markets. That means they are simply unregulated. In fact, around half of the chemicals on the market today have been subject to any safety testing at all. Since this act also included trade secret laws, manufacturers don’t even have to post what ingredients are in their products.
If you go look at a bottle of household cleaner, you may be surprised to see that they only list a small percentage of the ingredients in the bottle.
There are so many ingredients that have been proven carcinogenic (which means they can cause cancer) that are being used in so many household products.
Not to mention all of the other chemicals known to be skin irritant’s, neurotoxins, and so much more. Here are just a few of the top ones:
- Alcohol
- Aluminum
- DEA/TEA
- Propylene Glycol
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
- TALC
- Parabens
- Fragrance
- Diethanolamine
- Chloroform
- Benzyl Alcohol
From your bath and beauty products, to the cleaners that you use around the house, these ingredients lurk everywhere, and that Top ten list is a great place to start!
